Common questions
Ergonomic desk assessment questions.
What does an ergonomic desk assessment do?
Desk pain is rarely one thing. It is a monitor an inch too low, a chair never sized to you, a keyboard that bends your wrists outward, and lighting that makes you lean without noticing. An ergonomic desk assessment finds every contributor, ranks them by the load each puts on your body, and tells you what to fix first.
This one uses the diagnostic framework a Healthcare Ergonomic Assessment Specialist uses one-on-one. Every section adapts to what you have already reported. Report wrist pain and your keyboard and mouse options change. Say your desk is a fixed height and the chair section changes with it.
What kinds of pain does the assessment cover?
Pain and symptoms in every part of the body a desk loads:
- Head and eyes: tension headaches, eye strain, dry or tired eyes, blurry vision by the end of the day (computer vision syndrome).
- Neck and shoulders: neck pain and stiffness (“tech neck”), tight upper traps, shoulder pain and impingement.
- Elbows and forearms: tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, forearm tendinitis, cubital tunnel symptoms (tingling in the ring and little fingers).
- Wrists, hands and thumbs: carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist tendinitis, De Quervain’s tendinitis, thumb pain from mousing or phone use, numb or tingling fingers (including waking with numb hands), repetitive strain injury.
- Back and hips: upper and mid-back pain, lower back pain, sciatica-type pain down the leg, tight hip flexors and hip pain.
Basically, anything that can be caused or made worse by a poor desk setup. The assessment does not diagnose or treat any condition. If numbness, weakness or pain keeps getting worse, see a clinician.
Is the assessment free?
Yes. Desk Doctor’s mission is to end desk pain, so the assessment is free for anyone at a desk. No payment, no card, no paywall. The site is funded by affiliate commissions when readers buy something recommended, which is why the report puts free adjustments first and equipment only where adjustment cannot fix the problem. There are no sponsored placements.
How long does it take?
About fifteen minutes across twelve sections. You need nothing to start. A tape measure helps with desk height and depth, but a paper-sheet method is built in if you do not have one.
Will I have to buy anything?
No. Most people get meaningful relief from changes to equipment they already own: seat height, monitor position, chair recline, where the light sits. New equipment appears only when your current setup cannot be adjusted to fit you.
Who built it, and how are products scored?
AJ Prince, a certified Healthcare Ergonomic Assessment Specialist conducting over a thousand workstation assessments a year. Measurements are grounded in CAESAR anthropometric data, BIFMA G1-2013 and the ANSI/HFES 100-2007 human factors standard.
Products are ranked by DEAS, the Desk Ergonomics Assessment Score, a three-layer, eleven-dimension clinical scoring system built from published research and thousands of assessments.
